ALESSANDRO SAMBINI

Born in Rovigo in 1982, he lives and works in Milan. After obtaining a degree in Design and Arts from the Free University of Bolzano and an MA in Research Architecture within the Visual Cultures department at Goldsmiths’ College in London, he moved to Milan. Here he began to work with photography, video and other multimedia supports and to question the needs and methods that regulate the production of new images, their circulation and diffusion and the different areas of relationship between the image itself and its public. Since 2018 adjunct-professor of Photography at the MA in Visual art and Curatorial Studies and of Visual Communication at the MA in Photography at NABA (Milan) and since 2023 he leads a workshop on Photography practice in LABA, Brescia. 



Since January 2022 he has been working on the public commission 13 Photographers for 13 Museums, launched by the Direzione Regionale Musei della Lombardia with a site- specific project on the Cappella Espiatoria in Monza, exhibited at Palazzo Reale, Milan, in 2023. Since 2019 he has been working on the public performance 1624 and since 2021 on the project MARIO which he presented at ARTISSIMA 2021 in Turin and that is currently in an international patent phase. In 2023 he presented the work L’Era dei Giganti in the solo show at Galleria Michela Rizzo in Venice, curated by Francesca Lazzarini.

In 2020 in the occasion of 16th Giornata del Contemporaneo he has been invited by MART, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, Italy to develop a site specific project named The Gallery Revolve 2; he was also part of Metafotografia (2), Le Mutazioni Delle Immagini, BACO, Bergamo, curated by Sara Benaglia and Mauro Zanchi.

In 2018 he participated in Talking (about) Images, Škuc Gallery, Lublijana, curated by Francesca Lazzarini. In 2017 he took part in the group exhibition Fuocoapaesaggio curated by Dolomiti Contemporanee and was selected to participate in Plat(t)form 2017 at the Fotomuseum in Winterthur; in 2016 the Fondo Privato Acquisizioni per l’arte contemporanea of ArtVerona selected the work People at an exhibition for acquisition and deposit at MA*GA, Gallarate. The same work was presented on the occasion of the solo exhibition of the same name curated by Denis Isaia in July 2016 at Galleria Michela Rizzo. In the same year he participated in the group show Stories From the Edge, curated by Francesca Lazzarini, at the Kunsthaus in Graz (Austria) and in the exhibition On New Italian Photography, curated by Fantom at the Viasaterna Gallery (Milan 2016).

The artist’s projects were also presented during: Foto/Industria, 2nd Biennial of Industrial Photography, curated by François Hébel, at MAST (Bologna, 2015); Flags, at Serra dei Giardini, curated by Elena Forin (Venice, 2014); Lo Spettatore Emancipato, curated by Angela Madesani, at Galleria Giovanni Bonelli (Milan, 2014). He has collaborated with various institutions, including MUSEION, FORMA, MUFOCO, MAST, MA*GA and Triennale di Milano.

In 2021 he won the Premio Fabbri, in the Contemporary Photography section; in 2009 he won the XXIII Premio Gallarate Per Le Arti Visive, Terzo Paesaggio. Fotografia Italiana Oggi and in the same year he was a finalist in the GD4PhotoArt award, promoted by MAST.

He is co-founder of the collective POIUYT, together with Francesca Lazzarini, Gaia Tedone, The Cool Couple and Discipula, and his works are in the public Italian art collections of MART, MAGA, MUFOCO and Fondazione MAST.

Nato a Rovigo nel 1982, vive e lavora a Milano. Dopo aver conseguito la laurea in Design e Arti presso la Libera Università di Bolzano e un MA in Research Architecture presso il dipartimento di Visual Cultures del Goldsmiths' College di Londra, si trasferisce a Milano. Qui inizia a lavorare con la fotografia, il video e altri supporti multimediali e a interrogarsi sulle esigenze e le modalità che regolano la produzione di nuove immagini, la loro circolazione e diffusione e i diversi ambiti di relazione tra l'immagine stessa e il suo pubblico. Dal 2018 è adjunct-professor di Fotografia presso il MA in Visual art and Curatorial Studies e di Comunicazione Visiva presso il MA in Fotografia della NABA (Milano) e dal 2023 conduce un workshop sulla pratica fotografica presso la LABA di Brescia. 

Da gennaio 2022 lavora alla commissione pubblica 13 Fotografi per 13 Musei, lanciata dalla Direzione Regionale Musei della Lombardia con un progetto site specific sulla Cappella Espiatoria di Monza, esposto a Palazzo Reale, Milano, nel 2023. Dal 2019 lavora alla performance pubblica 1624 e dal 2021 al progetto MARIO, presentato ad ARTISSIMA 2021 a Torino e attualmente in fase di brevetto internazionale. Nel 2023 ha presentato l'opera L'Era dei Giganti nella personale alla Galleria Michela Rizzo di Venezia, a cura di Francesca Lazzarini. Nel 2020, in occasione della XVI Giornata del Contemporaneo, è stato invitato dal MART, Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, a sviluppare un progetto site specific denominato The Gallery Revolve 2; ha inoltre partecipato a Metafotografia (2), Le Mutazioni Delle Immagini, BACO, Bergamo, a cura di Sara Benaglia e Mauro Zanchi.

Nel 2018 ha partecipato a Talking (about) Images, Galleria Škuc, Lublijana, a cura di Francesca Lazzarini. Nel 2017 ha preso parte alla mostra collettiva Fuocoapaesaggio a cura di Dolomiti Contemporanee ed è stato selezionato per partecipare a Plat(t)form 2017 presso il Fotomuseum di Winterthur; nel 2016 il Fondo Privato Acquisizioni per l'arte contemporanea di ArtVerona ha selezionato l'opera People at an exhibition per l'acquisizione e il deposito presso il MA*GA, Gallarate.
