Never heard the word ‘Myoptimism’? No idea what it means? If curiosity keeps you awake at night, we look forward to seeing you at MLZ Art Dep on Saturday 21 September, at 6.30 pm, for the world premiere of the Reverse Contradictionary. The result of provocative and edgy imaginations of renowned net.art pioneer Vuk Ćosić and the acclaimed collective IOCOSE, the new vocabulary - that looks at the digital sphere with irony and biting criticismis - is edited in collaboration with new media expert Vladan Joler.
Together with the first nucleus of headwords, old and new works by the artists will tear you away from apathy and activate your acumen to deciphering hidden codes, reasoning about new meanings and the way the world works, and playing with language in the freest and most uncontrolled ways.
Language is indeed at the center of the dialogue between Ćosić and IOCOSE as well as the starting point for many of their respective media research.
The art collective IOCOSE working with a variety of media and materials since 2006, including websites, video installations, prints, paintings, sunflower seeds and dogs. IOCOSE's works explore and re-interpret the traces left in our present world by narratives about the future of technology. The collective is formed by 4 artists, divided between Italy, Germany and the UK: Matteo Cremonesi, Filippo Cuttica, Davide Prati and Paolo Ruffino. They claim to have exhibited their work in truly incredible places, such as Fondazione Modena Arti Visive (2022), MAMbo (2018), Fotomuseum Winterthur (2017), The Photographers Gallery (2018, 2016), Science Gallery (2012), Jeu de Paume (2011), FACT (2012), Transmediale (2013, 2015), Aksioma (2011, 2023) and Tate Modern (2011).
Vuk Ćosić is a net.artist and co-founder of the mailing lists ‘nettime’, ‘Syndicate’ and the Ljubljana Digital Media Lab. He has exhibited in many galleries, museums and lectured at several dozen art academies, seemingly withstanding the test of time. He refuses to run his life like a business, but writes, quotes, imitates and collects his work. His background training as an archaeologist, combined with an avant-garde ethic, has provided him with the long-term vision and quick bursts of passion needed to work in critical media arts. He sometimes writes about himself in third person. Using poetic media archaeology, he creates performances, videos, books and monuments that investigate the social impact of the relationship between the genesis of media technologies and art.
He has recently exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the ICA in London, the Barbican in London, the Beaubourg in Paris, the ICC in Tokyo, the Kunsthalle in Vienna, the Digital Artlab in Tel Aviv, and the Stedelijk in Amsterdam; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Lux, London; Ars Electronica, Linz; Walker, Minneapolis; Postmasters; MIT, Cambridge; NYC; Chisenhale, London; Whitechappel, London; Friedricanum, Kassel; Škuc, Ljubljana and many others.

Se la curiosità ti leva il sonno ti aspettiamo sabato 21 settembre, alle 18.30, da MLZ Art Dep dove sarà presentato in anteprima mondiale il primo nucleo del Reverse Contradictionary, frutto dell’incontro tra le fantasie provocatorie e taglienti del celebre pioniere della net.art Vuk Ćosić e dell'acclamato collettivo IOCOSE. Scritto in collaborazione con l’esperto di new media Vladan Joler, questo nuovo contro-dizionario inverso guarda alla sfera digitale con ironia e pungente criticismo.
Insieme agli inediti lemmi, inoltre, vecchie e nuove opere degli artisti vi strapperanno all’apatia attivando il vostro acume per decifrare codici nascosti, ragionare su nuovi significati e sull’andamento del mondo, giocare col linguaggio nei modi più liberi e incontrollati.
Proprio il linguaggio è perno del dialogo tra l’artista e il collettivo nonché innesco di molte delle rispettive ricerche mediali.
Il collettivo artistico IOCOSE lavora dal 2006 con una varietà di mezzi e materiali, tra cui siti web, video installazioni, stampe, dipinti, semi di girasoli e cani. Le opere di IOCOSE esplorano e re-interpretano le tracce lasciate nel nostro mondo presente dalle narrative sul futuro della tecnologia. Il collettivo è formato da 4 artisti, divisi tra Italia, Germania e Regno Unito: Matteo Cremonesi, Filippo Cuttica, Davide Prati e Paolo Ruffino. Vuk Ćosić è un esponente della net.art e cofondatore delle mailing list 'nettime', 'Syndicate' e del Ljubljana Digital Media Lab. Ha esposto in molte gallerie e musei e ha tenuto lezioni in diverse decine di accademie d'arte, resistendo apparentemente alla prova del tempo. Si rifiuta di gestire la sua vita come un'azienda, ma del suo lavoro si scrive, si cita, si imita e si colleziona. La sua formazione di base come archeologo, combinata con un'etica avanguardista, gli ha fornito la visione a lungo termine e le rapide esplosioni di passione necessarie per lavorare nelle arti critiche dei media. A volte scrive di sé in terza persona. Utilizzando l'archeologia poetica dei media crea spettacoli, video, libri e monumenti che indagano l'impatto sociale del rapporto tra la genesi delle tecnologie mediali e l'arte.
